Pirate Nerd Mostly Captain Vane

I am a huge Age of Piracy nerd. I was always interested in history, but pirates are my favorite subject. Of course, I’m a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean. However, when Black Sails came out, I hesitated because I feared mistakes would show. Yet, Captain Vane noticed me!

I researched the series, made sure the characters were true to what they were in history for those of them that existed. Captain Charles Vane being one of my favorites, I cringed. I was afraid, but seeing the actor and reading a few quotes, he got me.

Summary of Captain Vane & Black Sails

A prequel to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island, Black Sails is a pirate adventure that centers on the tales of Captain Flint, who has a reputation throughout the West Indies as being the most brilliant, most feared of all the Golden Age pirates.

It’s 1715, and as Flint fights for the survival of New Providence Island—a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves, and fortune seekers—in the wake of threats from British and Spanish forces, he aligns himself with Eleanor Guthrie, daughter of the local kingpin, to hunt the ultimate prize and ensure his people’s survival.

However, standing in the way are rival captains, Eleanor’s intrusive father, and perhaps the biggest obstacle of all: John Silver, a young, fast-talking, authority-flouting sailor recently added to Flint’s crew.

Also, not to brag but, Captain Vane noticed me!

Captain Vane & Twitter

Now, I’m going to watch the series and give it a shot. Then again, I couldn’t resist and drew Captain Vane. What was the most remarkable thing that happened?

“Charles Vane, of the Ranger.”

— Charles Vane, Black Sails.

I drew Captain Charles Vane, posted it on Twitter and thought to myself, “Oh, why not tag the actor?” I thought nothing of it. Note that I posted it around 3:00 AM.

Then, I saw in the morning that the official fan club of Zach McGowan answered and retweeted my work. I was ecstatic! Proud of myself, I kept typing my next novel.

I was about to take a shower before dinner when I grabbed my phone. I decided to take a look at my Twitter, and this happened!

High As Kite

I’m going to admit, I’m still on a high and jumping up and down! I can’t believe this happened to me! I am so grateful and hope I don’t come down from this high and that it brings out the best I have in my work. Dreams do come true!
